MOSCOW, Oct 5 (PRIME) -- Russia’s multi-industry holding Sistema, state corporation Rostec, and state-controlled telecom operator Rostelecom have suggested obliging connection operators to build networks on equipment with an open interface, like Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN), business daily Kommersant reported on Monday.

“The market is now run by the proprietary model, when a supplier creates all elements of a network with equipment by one vendor installed on each section. One can switch to another producer only by replacing the whole network,” Gulnara Khasyanova, head of Autonomous non-commercial organization Telecommunications Technologies, said.
The open interface policy will fight market monopolization by the major vendors and will make it possible to introduce local equipment when there is some.
At present, China’s Huawei, Sweden’s Ericsson, and Finland’s Nokia are the largest suppliers of equipment for Russian connection operators.
Local equipment on the base of OpenRAN, including for 5G, is developed by firm Element, belonging to Sistema and Rostec, together with Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and the country’s top mobile operator MTS.
